whenever that might be—but the instant you’re missed downstairs, DeRohan may remember how eager you were to come up here and charge upstairs to investigate. So the way I see it, we have just one hope.”

“What’s that?”

the building, so there’s a blind spot there. Since this suite takes up the west corner of the building, we might use that to our advantage. The balustrade of this balcony runs the length of the entire seventh floor. The balconies of the suites on this floor don’t connect, but the balustrades do. The width of the top of the balustrade is about a foot and a half wide—enough to walk on, though admittedly challenging to one unaccustomed to heights and wearing an evening gown. But if you’re game, we could step onto that ledge and walk around the corner of the building and all the way down the west façade. Around the back of the building there’s a service ladder used by the window washers, which will take us right up to the roof. The west side of the hotel will be dark, so nobody will spot us.”

To make the prospect even more terrifying, a flash of lightning split the night and all at once the sky opened and a heavy rain began to fall.

Everything seemed to be falling apart.

“It’s starting to rain. Won’t it be slippery on the marble ledge?”

“We’ll have to be extra careful. But I’ll help you.”

“What if you took that route of escape while I go back the way I came? After all, the guard isn’t going to shoot me—”

“No. But he’ll tell your husband you were up here by yourself. DeRohan will come straight here, see the letter’s gone, and have a little reception party waiting for me when I finally get down from the building—or more likely, he’ll shoot me off the west façade.”

The image of DeRohan gunning her lover down was more agonizing than the prospect of stepping onto the ledge. Jules swallowed hard. “Very well, then. Let’s go.”

He stowed the letter in his pouch, returned the empty envelope to its place in the safe, closed the door, and gave the dial a spin. Then he replaced the false front of the fireplace, took her by the hand, and led her to the balcony.

But along the way, the room was suddenly illuminated by a massive flash of lightning, instantly followed by the loudest crack of thunder she’d ever heard in her life.

There has to be another way.”

He put his other gloved hand over hers. “Cara, there is no other way.”

“You don’t understand. It was the war. For years, we lived in fear that the enemy would come into Vienna at any moment and destroy us. So every time there was thunder, we thought it was their cannons and we died a little.
